What are .DOC files? Most of us are familiar with .DOC files as being Microsoft’s file format for Word documents. However few of us will realize that in the early days of word processors .DOC format wasn’t proprietary to Microsoft, but was a general file extension used for plain-text documents created by a number of applications including WordPerfect. It was only in the 1990’s that Microsoft .DOC to identify its proprietary word processing format.

Since then the .DOC format has changed on a number of occasions, with the latest update being the most significant (with the introduction of the .DOCX format). This latest innovation introduces XML (Extensible Markup Language) technology to word documents. To open .DOC files you can use Microsoft Word itself, or certain other applications such as OpenOffice.org, StarOffice, AbiWord or KWord, while to open .DOCX files you will either need to use Word 2007, or download a plugin for older versions of Word.

What are .JAR files? (I think this was one of those question asked just to catch me out!) These are Java archive files which combine a number of files into a single one and are used to distribute Java source files. We shouldn’t confuse .JAR files with compressed archive files created using the JAR archiving tool (the successor of ARJ) which instead have the file extension .J.

What are .TMP files and can I delete them? Like the DOC file the TMP file is one of the most common file extensions. Temporary (ie TMP) files are generated by software for one of two reasons: either as a backup file or as a cache for saving data that can’t be saved elsewhere. In the case of cache files these can be generated automatically by programs that run out of memory space to allocate for tasks. Although innovations in systems architecture and software design (such as the use of virtual memory) have reduced the need for the generation of .TMP files some software will still need them.

Temporary files should be deleted by the program that generated them, however sometimes, due to a software crash or poor software design the TMP files aren’t removed. Over time they can build up on your PC and start to take up a significant amount of space on your hard drive. Which is why it is important periodically to search your hard drive for TMP files, and then remove them.
